This year we have seen disappointing results in HSC exams and many believe it was due to the students spending inordinately long time on the internet. The possibility cannot be ruled out altogether. The parents and teachers have a role to play here and students should also remain alert about the bad effects of excessive internet use. We see many young people spend hours on Facabook and other social sites.
I admit it is not easy to stop or limit the extent of internet use. Too many distractions are there for students in society and in the visual world. We see the teenagers are practically glued to their computers and Smartphones. We cannot blame children only for being excessively addicted to the internet. There is no open space to play for them as a result of which they have to stay indoors most of the time. They are left with very little choice apart from browsing the internet on computers or mobile phones. The Internet has many positive benefits to offer, but if we fail to control its excessive use, the negative effects will outweigh the positives. I hope, the teachers in schools will talk about the negative effects of using excessive internet so that students remain alert and derive maximum benefits from information technology and at the same time stay away from its harmful effects.
