Illegal practice of IPL betting

Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the richest tournaments in the world cricket in terms of money, glamour, excitement and popularity. Cricket enthusiasts all over the world eagerly wait for it. However during every IPL season, controversies about sports betting do the rounds. It has become a trend even in Bangladesh. It is frequent not only in our main cities, but also the district towns and countryside. In most cases, people bet from Tk 500 to 1,500 per match. Betting also takes place on how many wickets to fall in the powerplay, how many runs will be scored in a ball or in an over and more. This illegal act is quite an open secret in village markets and tea stalls. Sometimes, people engage themselves in violent clashes over this betting. Besides this, some people are reportedly involved in online betting and gambling, which can take away their everything.
IPL betting has become a headache for all of us, especially in rural areas. And, it needs to be eliminated soon.Otherwise, it will encourage similar illegal practices and derail our younger generations. Authorities and the people concerned should come forward and work collaboratively to put an end to this illegal practice. The law enforcers must play their part, too.
