Implementing Road Safety Act

September 14, 2022 00:00:00

The Road Safety Foundation in its recent report said that as many as 632 road accidents had occurred in Bangladesh only in last July, killing 739 and leaving 2,042 injured. Students of different educational institutions took to the streets recently demanding justice and road safety after the death of one of their fellows in a road accident in the capital's Tejgaon. The agitated students blocked the Farmgate and Bijoy Sarani crossings and held demonstrations there seeking a quick trial of those responsible for the death of their fellow student, and safe roads.

This is not the first time the students took to the city streets demanding safe roads. Still, at least 25 people are reportedly dying every day in road crashes in our country. We, therefore, urge the government to speed up the implementation of the Road Transport Act 2018. More importantly, stricter traffic regulations are required on accident-prone areas of the highways. We need a complete overhaul of transport sector before it is too late.
