At the core of every learning process, there lie two fundamental concepts: deep learning and surface learning. Deep learning is a committed approach to learning where the learner uses cognitive skills to master academic content, work collaboratively, think and interact critically with the content being learned. Maybe for some reasons, students tend to avoid the hard work and instead rely on single sources of information, and as a result they learn only what is required but nothing more. This is referred to as surface learning. It is mainly a way that encourages memorising, and limited to textbooks and academic learning materials. For an instance, surface learners solve their math problems based on formulas but deep learners focus on understanding the concept and derivation of those formulas like how they work, from where they are derived and other thoughts and logical questions.
If we notice, we will see that successful scientists, businessmen, entrepreneurs, and leaders - all have been deep learners. Those who had achieved their goals smoothly, most of them were deep learners. Deep learners know how far they want to go. They know their limitations. They can even solve the unstructured data logically. They are basically critical thinkers. So, they love to solve problems based on their understanding of concepts. Most of them are creative as well. They love to try and explore new things.
Unfortunately, Bangladesh's education system does not follow deep learning methods. If we could arrange an atmosphere of deep learning, we would get many more researchers, scientists, novelists, business leaders, entrepreneurs, leaders and economists of quality.
