Importance of educational psychology

September 22, 2022 00:00:00

Educational psychology is the study of how people learn. It includes teaching methods, instructional processes and individual differences in learning. This branch of psychology helps a teacher evaluate whether the objective of teaching and learning in a classroom has been achieved or not. It also helps the teachers realise situational factors. These comprise managing the classroom environment, using modern teaching methods, and maintaining discipline in the classroom.

In higher educational institutions in Bangladesh, one fundamental criterion for getting position in the faculty is to have the pre-requisite qualification, a thorough knowledge of the subject, and an excellent research record. No one asks a faculty member whether he/she knows how to handle the students. University administrations think that a good researcher is a good teacher and vice versa. However, in many aspects, this proves to be wrong. Even with excellent skills in delivering lectures and communicating concepts, teachers sometimes find it difficult to handle the classroom. It is, therefore, essential that training in educational psychology be made necessary for the faculty in every field of study.
