Improving quality of English teaching

June 07, 2022 00:00:00

The standard of English in our rural educational institutions does not seem to be up to the mark. This can be further confirmed if we look at the result sheets of these schools and colleges. Most of the students obtain poor marks in English when they sit for any public examination. They not only perform poorly, but are also fearful of this foreign language. This is why they do not do well in exams. As a result, they cannot go beyond SSC and HSC levels.

The matter deserves attention of the highest authorities. It has been found that the state of English teaching in schools of our rural areas is anything but standard. Schools do not have quality English teachers and as a result the teaching is far below the required level. Bangladesh is one of the few countries where a person can start teaching without any specialised training.

The importance of English language is increasing day by day. And we need to give high priority to English teaching so that it may attain global standards. The authorities concerned should find a way out so that our rural students are not deprived of learning English properly.
