The research culture in Bangladesh is generally inadequate among graduate and postgraduate students. Many students do not know how to think critically and analyse things. Students mainly concentrate on reading materials and textbooks only. Most do not try to construct their own opinions and logic based on research. Research is not a priority. It causes trouble for students as they are not familiar with research methodologies. Research tasks should start at an under-graduate level to enhance research skills. Our education system is already way behind international standards on many counts, including research.
Moreover, our universities have a small number of research centres that are ill-equipped. Many are doing some consulting-type works in the name of research. So, the overall quality of research works in these centres is low. Shortage of funds for research is another bottleneck, especially for PhD research programmes. The government should provide schemes and fund facilities for encouraging students to do research works.
