Income tax fair: A good initiative
September 18, 2015 00:00:00
Income tax fair is indeed an innovative and encouraging initiative on the part of the National Board of Revenue (NBR). It is being acclaimed by tax payers of all categories. It will also help the tax payers to be fully aware of the process and modalities of paying taxes and relieve them of the hassles in the game. Such fairs should be held regularly so that people get to know a fast and easy way to pay taxes and other tax related matters.
This year, I noticed that the atmosphere was festive and not like the usual environment of government offices. I am sure through this initiative the government will be able to bring tax office closer to the people and they will be able to dispel fears and suspicion about tax matters. After 44 years of independence, we are still dependent on foreign aid which is disgraceful. We should be able to stand on our own feet and one way to make it possible is to pay taxes regularly and bring all taxable income earners under the tax net.
At the same time, we should develop an efficient, patriotic and corruption free tax department. The government must make sure that all the taxpayers' money is utilised properly in the interest of the country and its people. The National Board of Revenue is going to hold such tax fairs all over the country and it would be a positive move to encourage people to pay taxes and help develop a taxpayer-friendly environment.
