Increase ferries for Eid home-goers
April 20, 2022 00:00:00
On the occasion of Eid, city people head for their hometowns in droves. But they usually have to go through nightmarish experience on highways, thanks to gridlocks caused by poor road conditions and traffic management. The sufferings, however, are feared to multiply this year as more people than before are expected to leave the capital and other cities after two years of pandemic. Adding more sufferings to the home-goers, it has been reported that only six ferries will be plying during this Eid on the route of Shimulia in Munshiganj to Banglabazar in Madaripur. Usually, more than 15 ferries operate on this busy route. The number of ferries has reportedly decreased even on Paturia-Daulatdia route.
Although the load of vehicles at Shimulia-Banglabazar and Paturia-Daulatdia routes has increased by nearly 50 per cent, the number of ferries operating on them has reduced. Due to this, hundreds of vehicles will get stuck on either side of the Padma river during Eid, which will worsen Eid home-goers' sufferings. We urge the authorities concerned to look into the issue seriously and take steps to increase the number of ferries in order to avoid unmanageable rush on the ferry points.
