If the government increases the limit of tax-free income to Tk 0.25 million, the middle income group of people can get some respite. The prices of commodities have been increasing day by day, so are house rent and education expenses. Besides, every year, inflation eats away a good chunk of our income. We hope the government will widen the tax net to earn more revenue. It is indeed shameful that in a country of 160 million, there are only two million taxpayers. Due to widespread corruption in tax department, the government is being deprived of revenue and, unfortunately, have to extend our hand for loan and donation from international donors. If only 10 per cent of our population falls under the tax net, the total number of taxpayers will be 16 million. First and foremost, the government has to rein in corruption. Then only people will feel encouraged to pay taxes.
