The nation celebrates 44th year of its independence in a couple of days' time. It is a time when we look back as well as forward. We take stock of the departing year and make a fresh resolve to move forward in the coming year. We are proud to note that we are steadily moving along the path of growth and prosperity despite having a large population and limited resource. As we recount, we find that we have made commendable progress in alleviating poverty and eradicating illiteracy from the society. Bangladesh could have achieved more but for the self-seeking politicians who care more for themselves than the people. The people of our country are honest and hard working and satisfied with very little. Bangladesh is the world's eighth most populous country and have 61.0 per cent literacy rate among the male and 52.0 per cent among the female population. Although the literacy rate is rising, we need to remove illiteracy completely within a short time so that we can achieve more and offer more to the nation. I hope, on this joyful occasion, our leaders will rise above their petty personal and partisan interests and work for the betterment of the country. We must work together to bring about desired changes so that our future generation can live peacefully.
