April 12, 2011 00:00:00

Polling is underway for the second and final phase of assembly elections in India's north-eastern state of Assam, reports BBC. Large numbers of voters began queuing at polling stations before booths opened at 7am Monday. But security is tight in areas of the state where Bodoland separatists are fighting for an independent state. Assam's poll is one of several key state elections. Over the next month polls will be also held in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Pondicherry. The ruling Congress party is seeking a third successive term in Assam. Brisk polling has been recorded in the first three hours of voting with an estimated 22% of voters turning out, officials said.
