NEW DELHI, Sep 5 (AP): India's government has set up a committee to examine concerns over a nuclear deal with the United States that critics say could undermine the country's nuclear weapons program and independent foreign policy.
The committee, announced by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee late Tuesday, has been vehemently demanded by communist parties, which provide critical support for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Congress party-led government.
The pact should not be implemented until concerns about it have been addressed, the communists and the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party say.
"It's a mechanism. Let us see how it works," Gurudas Dasgupta, a Communist Party of India leader, said of the committee on Wednesday.
Critics of the deal argue it could cap India's nuclear weapons program, and allow the U.S. to dictate Indian foreign policy, especially toward Iran.
