Everyone desires a pollution-free environment, yet many hesitate to take action due to a lack of awareness and guidance. In recent years, rapid urbanisation and industrialisation have led to improper waste disposal by industries, which have become a major concern in Bangladesh. This unchecked dumping of industrial waste poses severe threats to the environment and public health, particularly in affected areas. As a result, pollution has reached alarming levels, impacting both urban and rural communities.
One major cause of industrial waste dumping is the lack of proper waste management infrastructure. Many industries dispose of toxic waste directly into rivers and open land due to inadequate treatment facilities and weak regulatory enforcement. Additionally, corruption and a lack of strict legal implementation further encourage these harmful practices.
These unsustainable industrial practices have far-reaching consequences. First and foremost, unchecked industrialisation releases excessive unfiltered smoke and hazardous chemicals into the environment. This exposure results in waterborne diseases, skin infections, and chronic illnesses, such as skin cancer, particularly in impoverished areas where health awareness is low. Moreover, the unauthorised operation of industries in rural regions not only encroaches on farmland and residential areas but also degrades living conditions for both humans and wildlife. In Bangladesh, industrial pollution has led to deteriorating air quality, forcing residents to avoid balconies and rooftops, reducing bird populations, and preventing animals from accessing clean water sources.
While industrialisation has significantly contributed to Bangladesh's economic growth, the resulting environmental degradation, health hazards, and declining living standards cannot be ignored. Therefore, ensuring sustainability through proper monitoring, industrial limitations, waste management practices, and strict law enforcement is essential for the well-being of all living beings.
