Though growing of onion in Bangladesh has increased in recent years, huge amounts of foreign exchange are spent for importing onion every year. Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) and Agriculture Extension Department (AED) need to take a project to make the country self-sufficient in onion production. Big-size onions, weighing 250 to 300 grams, are grown in Europe, whereas weight of our local onion varies from 10 to 25 grams. BADC can import big size onion seeds from Europe and sell those to farmers while AED can provide technical know-how among them. If it works, we can achieve self-sufficiency in onion within a couple of years.
