Introduce long-route inland trains

June 27, 2024 00:00:00

Fifty-three years have passed since our independence, yet long-distance inland train routes such as Chittagong - Rajshahi, Khulna - Sylhet, Rangpur - Chittagong, and Rajshahi - Cox's Bazar have not been introduced. Many people commute for work from various parts of the country, but there are limited options for long-distance travel. In today's modern world, Mobile Financial Services (MFS) and updated online banking systems facilitate business operations across long distances, necessitating frequent travel.

Bangladeshi people celebrate various occasions-religious, traditional, and heritage festivals-by travelling, especially to their villages or amusement parks, to spend quality time and refresh themselves amidst heavy workloads. Bangladesh, known for its natural beauty, attracts a large number of travellers from around the world.

In the past, Bangladeshis relied primarily on agriculture, eliminating the need for extensive travel for business purposes. However, with the increasing number of businesses and diverse economic activities, there is a growing need for convenient, user-friendly long-distance railway communication. A significant portion of our population comprises students, with many attending colleges and universities across the country. Centralised admission tests, such as those for medical colleges, place students for enrollment to different regions based on merit. Therefore, there is an urgent need for efficient long-distance transportation infrastructure.

Besides, Bangladesh is renowned for its seasonal fruits, with specific fruits cultivated in different regions-mangoes in Rajshahi, jackfruit in Mymensingh, pineapples in Tangail, etc. Facilitating easy transportation of these fruits across regions would benefit farmers by increasing profits and making fruits available everywhere. Therefore, policymakers should consider taking proactive steps towards extending the country's communications infrastructure.
