We have been celebrating Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bangla new year, since the days of great Moghul Emperor Akbar. Pahela Baishakh is a symbol of our tradition, culture and is a part of our pride. Every year we observe this with joy and festivity. Like all other previous occasions, we celebrated this year's Pahela Baishakh along with our friends, family members, colleagues, etc. All day-long we were enjoying different colourful events, e.g. live concert, Mongol Shova-jatra, fair, and a lot more. But unfortunately some ladies were subjected to sexual harassments this year by some criminals at TSC in Dhaka University. This nauseating incident left everybody in a state of shock and dismay. Is it our culture?
The authority of DU as well as Bangladesh Police can not avoid their responsibilities for being unable to protect the victims. Both authorities are equally liable for this heinous incident. This is a bad omen for society that we live in. Bangladesh Police and DU authority should be more careful about this issue so that any type of sexual harassment does not happen in future.
The government must take necessary steps to enforce laws of the land on the offenders and ensure that such incidents are not repeated in future.
