I spent a long time of my life in the old part of the Dhaka city and I am deeply nostalgic when I think about it. My connection with old Dhaka is deep-rooted. I visit old Dhaka particularly during holidays and meet friends and relatives. During the last Eid holidays I went to Islampur, which is situated in old Dhaka and is the hub of wholesale cloth business of our country. It was then raining and the Islampur road was submerged in water.
The road was already badly broken and passing through it was very difficult. I don't understand how an important road like Islampur remains in such a bad condition and why the road was lying un-repaired. Old Dhaka plays an important role in our economy. But people these days normally avoid visiting old Dhaka only due to poor and narrow roads there. Furthermore, there is serious traffic congestion most of the time which is another reason for most people to avoid old Dhaka if possible. I am sure the citizens who are living around Islampur are facing a hard time. Business activities also suffer due to bad road condition. I hope the new mayor will look into the matter and take immediate steps to improve the road condition of the old city.
