ROME, Oct 3 (AFP): Tens of thousands of people marched in the Italian capital on Saturday to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, but the event attracted less of a turnout than last year.
Days after the Italian leader survived a confidence vote in parliament, 50,000 people turned out to demand his resignation according to police; organisers put the figure at half a million.
The rally was organised by the Purple People, an Internet movement with no political party affiliation that mobilised more than 500,000 people against Berlusconi in a rally last December.
Wearing purple t-shirts or scarves, the protestors wound through the centre of Rome carrying "Dimettiti!" (Resign) banners.
