Jute can be the new trend
February 07, 2026 00:00:00
In today's world where using polythene bag is extremely harmful to the environment, jute bags can be our best friends. Jute is a natural fibre that is 100 per cent biodegradable and compostable.
Bangladesh carries a rich legacy of jute that dates back centuries, earning the country the title of "Golden Fibre Nation". The Bangladeshi jute industry has embraced innovation by developing products like jute-based fabrics, shoes and even bio-degradable ultra-thin poly sheet which is an eco-friendly alternative to conventional plastics. The invention of "Sonali Bag" which is a biodegradable bag made from jute cellulose is a major innovation. This product carries the potential to replace single use plastic bags globally, reinforcing Bangladesh's position as a leader in eco-friendly solutions.
Institutions like the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) are working to improve jute production and processing techniques. Research focuses on creating high yield, disease resistant varieties and finding innovative ways to use jute fibres, including in new industries like textiles and composites.
