WASHINGTON, Nov 28 (AFP): The second-in-command of the
Al- Qaeda terror network, Ayman Al-Zawahiri, said in a new internet video posted Thursday that Afghanistan's attempt to negotiate with the Taliban showed weakness.
The one hour, 20 minute video, posted on jihadist forums on November 27 and titled "Al-Azhar - The Lions' Den," was obtained by the US-based SITE Intelligence Group monitoring service.
In the video Zawahiri claims that the United States "is doomed to failure in Afghanistan and the tribal regions of Pakistan," a SITE statement read.
"Zawahiri perceives Afghan President Hamid Karzai's attempt to negotiate with the Taliban as a sign of the government's weakness," according to SITE.
On Pakistan, Zawahiri suggests that the government has been weakened but remains a US puppet.
