During a recent visit to Cox's Bazar sea beach, I spotted some people, who were busy picking up empty plastic bottles, juice boxes, chip packs and other waste materials thrown on the beach by daily visitors. What caught my attention was that they were obviously not the designated garbage collectors. On enquiry, I found out they were volunteers of a social organisation.
It was only as a result of their efforts that I realised how much waste was actually lying around the area. Despite availability of waste bins, people have a tendency to throw trash without realising what this could do to the environment. I know that a cleaning activity from a few dozens of volunteers cannot clear the beach of trash. However, the message was in the action itself. At least, I pledged to myself not to litter again. These people were actually making a contribution to reviving the picturesque image of this beach on their own.
It is surely beyond the capacity of the government alone to conduct regular cleaning of the green forests and beaches. Every one of us needs to realise our duty and play an active role in keeping the country clean and green. Similarly, the volunteer organisations - as I saw - can also contribute to maintaining the beauty of our tourist spots by keeping them free of trash and other pollutants.
