Kuwait's first female minister quits

August 26, 2007 00:00:00

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 25 (AFP): Kuwaiti Health Minister Maasuma al-Mubarak, the Gulf emirate's first female cabinet member, has resigned, newspapers reported Saturday.
Mubarak tendered her resignation one day after two patients died in a huge fire at a Kuwaiti hospital and as Islamist MPs geared up to call her to account in parliament.
Mubarak became Kuwait's first female minister when she was given the planning and administrative development portfolio in June 2005, one month after parliament passed a bill granting women political rights.
