Largest e-library in South Asia

February 06, 2019 00:00:00

The Financial Express published a report on February 02, 2019, where it was stated that the Dhaka University Faculty of Business Studies has opened the largest e-library in South Asia.

The informative report mentioned that the library, offering both printed and e-books, was established in August 2015 through the joint initiative of DU, University Grants Commission, Dell, Orion Group and private mobile operator Robi Axiata Limited. The e-library is also affiliated with around 50 overseas universities and international publishers including Taylor and Francis, De Gruyter LIS books collection, Emerald eBook Series, Oxford Online, SAGE, Cambridge, World Scientific, Gale Virtual Reference Library, McGraw Hill, MyiLibrary, Springer, and Pearson. These are definitely great resources for students of the DU.

A digital library or e-library is a collection of documents in organised electronic form, available on the internet or on CD-ROM (compact-disk read-only memory) disks. Depending on the specific library, a user may be able to access magazine articles, books, papers, images, sound files, and videos through internet in such e-libraries. An e-library is thus regarded as one of the greatest assets of emerging technology that any academic institution can have. It is certainly wonderful then that the DU has one now.

Some institutions have begun the task of converting classic books to electronic format for distribution on the internet. The DU initiative in this regard should be appreciated. Some files in e-library can be viewed directly in HTML format; others can be downloaded in PDF format and printed. Some publishers keep electronic files of books and produce them one unit at a time in printed and bound form on demand.

Library is an important cornerstone of any knowledge-based society. It gives people the opportunity to research and explore publication, find ready reference of journals and periodicals, experience new ideas, immerse themselves in wonderful stories, while at the same time providing a sense of place for gathering. It reflects the diversity and character, and the needs and expectations of our community.

I would like to urge the university's administration to focus more on taking similar steps to add more resources to the university.
