Children are going to school, people rushing to work, offices functioning normally, shops and markets remain busy and noisy with usual altercations between the buyers and the sellers - the city is back to its normal look with intolerable traffic jam. This is the usual picture of our city, and we are very much used to it. The most soothing news is that the country's garments industries are back on the track. The buyers are already back and they have resumed negotiating orders for the year with normalcy in the air. Buyers are showing a positive attitude with the new government taking charge. The government's export-friendly initiatives are also helping to attract new orders.
Sometimes we are deprived of this usual beauty of our city. The streets become warring sites of rival political groups. And what we experienced during the past couples of months surpassed all our bitter experiences. Bombs and crackers were hurled indiscriminately killing innocent people, trains put on fire and rails uprooted, vehicles torched and vandalised and there was indeed a reign of terror. Businesses and production were badly hampered, even educational institutions were not spared. Future of our children was at a stake.
We want to move ahead burying all that. I hope good sense will prevail on our politicians. The first hartal on Thursday last since the incumbent government took over, passed off, more or less, peacefully. Though the hartal callers promised not to resort to any kind of violence to enforce the shutdown, we noticed some kind of violence taking place in several places in the northern districts. I think politicians should be respectful to their own commitments.
