Despite smoking being widely known as injurious to health, many of us are reluctant to take the warning seriously and give it up. The smokers must realise the damaging effect of smoking and make up their mind to quit this bad habit as it not only damages their health, but also pollutes the environment. The nicotine content of cigarettes gives temporary kicks and the smokers feel inclined to have more of it. If we quit smoking, our bodies will show positive signs of improvement. We shall have more appetite and acquire greater energy and stamina to work more. We find many young people around us smoking cigarettes either individually or in groups. What is more disconcerting is the fact that the number of women smokers in our society is increasing every day. As it happens, many young people take up smoking as a fashion statement or for peer pressure. But unfortunately, they soon become addicted and then find it difficult to quit. Nearly two-thirds of the total smokers of the world live in only ten countries including Bangladesh. The government should therefore strengthen its anti-tobacco drive and get the country rid of this damaging habit.
