Livestock sector's potential

Bangladesh was once highly dependent on Indian cattle. But now, we are almost self-reliant in meeting our own demand. Millions of cattle are slaughtered across the country during Eid-ul-Azha. A recent survey of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics has found that the number of cattle and goats has increased manifold in the past several years. However, many of our livestock farmers still lack knowledge of modern practices.

The livestock sector can create new opportunities for farmers. This can be a potential sector for the country, if our government starts paying due attention to the farms. Also, the productivity and quality of the country's livestock needs further improvement. The rural infrastructures such as roads should be developed to facilitate communication of the rural livestock farms with the local marketplaces.
