Living in Dhaka

Talk shows continue to be aired on all TV channels of Dhaka highlighting water-logging, traffic jam, dirty roads, foot paths occupied by hawkers, etc. But a recent study shows that Dhaka is the second dirtiest city of the world after Damascus. We all remember, the two newly elected mayors of Dhaka made many promises to improve the living conditions of Dhaka, but after getting elected they only engaged themselves in a blame game. Both the mayors continue to blame various agencies of the government, numbering a few dozens. As a citizen I do not find any earthly reason why garbage in the city can not be removed by the city corporations themselves. They certainly do not need the help of any other agency to do so. Surface drains are choked and the only agency responsible is DCC. DCC can entrust the job to ward commissioners and do not require the help of dozen other agencies. Area-wise DCC tax collection against expenditure may be published while big anomalies exist in DCC taxation system that require review from time to time. DDC can easily undertake construction of car parks to reduce parking beside the roads that is the prime cause of traffic congestions. Many similar examples can be cited which can be done by DCC alone without the help of others. DCC should concentrate on these jobs without  involving in useless debates.
