Lured by false promises into human trafficking

March 17, 2019 00:00:00

This refers to the editorial titled 'No impunity for human trafficking' that was published in The Financial Express on March 09. It was a timely piece.

Hapless women, especially young ones, are lured by false promises and taken to various countries by unscrupulous and anti-social elements. These women are sold to the flesh trade. India, like many nations, is a signatory to these conventions, but implementation is poor, because of factors such as corruption, lack of capacity and expertise and cultural norms, attitudes and stigmas.

In India, children from poor and rural communities, especially those with emotional, physical and learning difficulties, are particularly vulnerable to inter-country trafficking.

Countries need to work together to stop human trafficking. The culprits should be brought to book and exemplary punishment should be given to them.

Every human being deserves a decent life on this earth.
