Lurking dangers in Gulistan

January 16, 2025 00:00:00

Gulistan is widely recognised as one of the busiest and most commercially vibrant areas in Bangladesh. With its bustling markets and significant establishments such as Bangabazar, Stadium Market, and the Dhaka City Corporation Office, Gulistan attracts people from all walks of life. Unfortunately, the very factors that contribute to its prominence have also made it a hotspot for congestion and safety concerns.

Approximately four and a half thousand hawkers set up shop on the sidewalks of Gulistan daily. This practice renders the sidewalks inaccessible, forcing pedestrians to use the roads instead. The resulting chaos not only exacerbates traffic congestion but also poses significant risks to pedestrian safety. The bus stands, bazaars, and shopping malls further contribute to overcrowding, creating a breeding ground for pickpocketing, robberies, and other criminal activities. Such incidents are common when the crowds go out of control.

Adding to the complexity, Gulistan serves as a major traffic hub in Dhaka. The roads are perpetually clogged with buses, trucks, private cars, rickshaws, and motorcycles. The lack of adequate pedestrian facilities, such as sidewalks and zebra crossings, makes crossing the streets an extremely perilous endeavour. For pedestrians, navigating through this chaos is nothing short of a daily struggle, and accidents are a frequent.

The situation calls for immediate and effective action from the authorities. It is imperative for the authorities concerned to free up the sidewalks from illegal hawkers, implement proper traffic management systems, and ensure the availability of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, including zebra crossings. Law enforcement must also be strengthened to curb criminal activities and ensure public safety.

Gulistan, with its importance as a commercial and transportation centre, deserves better management to enhance the quality of life for its residents and visitors. We urge the authorities concerned to prioritise addressing these issues and take proactive steps to alleviate the traffic congestion and safety hazards in this area.
