Make public transports pro-public

February 02, 2024 00:00:00

Dhaka's public transport system, the lifeline of countless lower and middle-class residents, currently operates in a dire state, causing immense daily struggle for its users. The absence of designated bus stops, haphazard route adherence, and mid-road halts create relentless traffic jams, frustration, and wasted time. Moreover, frequent altercation over fares escalates at times into verbal and even physical violence.

As Bangladesh embraces technological advancements, it's imperative to modernise our public transport system for serving citizens better. The aggressive behaviour of some transport workers, including physically forcing passengers onto vehicles with intimidation tactics, must be avoided.

Fortunately, solutions exist. We can leverage technology to implement digital ticketing systems - accessible through apps and allowing daily or monthly passes - with payment options integrated, eliminating the need for cash handling and potential fare disputes.

But a change requires collective action. Transport owners, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), and the Ministry of Roads and Bridges must collaborate to prioritise passengers' well-being. We need designated bus stops, stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, and clear guidelines for passenger treatment.

Let us work together to transform Dhaka's public transport into a safe, efficient, and passenger-friendly network it deserves to be. This will not only ease the daily commute for countless citizens but also contribute to a more livable and equitable city for all. Although the metro rail system ushered in a revolutionary change in Dhaka's public transportation system, not all commuters of the city can avail of the facility. We understand that plans are afoot to bring the whole city under the network of metro rail system, but it will take time. So, in the meantime efforts should be made to make existing public transport system more pro-people.
