Making Cumilla a division

October 02, 2024 00:00:00

How long must the inhabitants of Cumilla wait to hear the news that their region will be declared an administrative division, spreading joy and celebration throughout the area? There is no doubt that the indecision of the past governments regarding Cumilla's identity has caused dissatisfaction and frustration among its citizens. Announcing Cumilla as a division under its rightful name would be a positive step for the interim government.

Under the Awami League regime, Cumilla has been deprived of many opportunities, with its contributions often overlooked. The demand for its status as a division is justified in many ways. Cumilla's significance and functionality already reflect the characteristics of a division, even if it lacks the official title. This is not just a local demand but a widespread desire for the region's development and recognition.

Currently, for even minor tasks, people are forced to travel to Dhaka, increasing both the pressure on the capital and the burden of traffic congestion. Reducing dependence on Dhaka should be a priority. Additionally, students from Cumilla must frequently travel to Dhaka and Chattogram to sit for job exams, wasting both time and money. For the well-being of the people, controversies should be resolved by officially announcing Cumilla as a division.
