Making fastening of seat belt mandatory

Seat belt use in passenger vehicles can save many lives. According to a study, 90.30 per cent Americans regularly use seat belts in their cars. However, it is unfortunate that seat belts seem to have no use in Bangladesh. Only a few conscious people buckle up every time they ride on a car. Our traffic police have succeeded to make every motorcyclist wear a helmet through strict surveillance and fining. But they have not yet tried to implement seat belt use on a mandatory-basis, which can avert a number of road accidents and associated casualties.

In most of the road accidents in our country, people die from head injuries. In this case, seat belts may reduce this kind of fatalities. We urge the traffic police department to look into the matter seriously and implement the law of fastening seat belts.
