The recent police crackdown on protesters of the quota reform movement has sparked significant criticism and condemnation of the force, severely tarnishing their image. Additionally, there is considerable confusion among the public regarding the role of police officers.
Currently, a reform process is underway, accompanied by a reshuffle within the police force. For example, a recent order from the Ministry of Home Affairs resulted in the reassignment of 11 Police Superintendents and 12 Deputy Inspector Generals of Police. Specifically, those who were deprived promotion during Sheikh Hasina's administration are now being promoted to their anticipated positions. This process is expected to continue. However, it is crucial to evaluate the responsibility and integrity of newly promoted police officers before they assume their roles, and they must demonstrate their abilities in their respective positions.
The police must restore their image, which was damaged by their involvement in attacks and the killing of students and protesters during recent mass uprisings. Mere changes in uniform and logos are insufficient to boost their morale. Reform is the key. It is essential to establish clear procedures for appointments, promotions, rewards, and punishments within the law. An independent police commission should be formed to ensure officers can operate free from government interference.
While granting operational autonomy to the police is crucial, it is equally important to maintain accountability, integrity, and proper use of force. The focus should be on the principle that the police are part of the public, and must be served as best as the force can. It is essential to remember that the integrity and performance of the police are closely linked to their conduct. For effective governance, the police must operate with autonomy and serve the common people, not lord them over.
