Making seat belt use mandatory

August 05, 2021 00:00:00

One of the safest choices drivers and passengers can make is to buckle up. Seat belt use in passenger vehicles can save many lives. According to a study, 90.30 per cent Americans regularly used seat belts in their cars in 2020. However, it is unfortunate that seat belts seem to have no use in Bangladesh. Only a few conscious people buckle up every time they ride in a car. Our traffic police have succeeded to make every motorcyclist wear a helmet through strict surveillance and fining. But they have not yet tried to implement seat belt use mandatorily, which can avert a number of road accidents and associated casualties.

In most of the road accidents in our country people die from having head injuries. In this case, seat belts may reduce this kind of death. And our drivers do not bother to drive fast whenever it is possible. So, using seat belts must be made compulsory. We urge the traffic police department to look into the matter seriously, and implement the law of fastening one's seat belts.
