Making zakat count

The aim of Zakat is to eradicate poverty from the society, bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, and help poor and needy people to come out of the vicious circle of poverty and become self-dependent.
For many decades in Bangladesh, the rich have been donating lungis, saris, and insignificant amount of money as Zakat. This does not allow the poor people to become self-sufficient. They continue to remain poor. Often such practices lead to stampedes killing people in the process.
It is very important that we donate Zakat according to the rules. If the Zakat givers properly calculate their amount of Zakat and collectively donate Zakat targeting the right group, then it is possible to significantly reduce the number of poor people in our society.
