Malaysia's PM set to marry again

June 10, 2007 00:00:00

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 (AFP): Malaysians were set to get a new first lady Saturday when widowed Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi gets remarried after finding a second love with his former sister-in-law.
Only close family members were expected to be on hand for the private ceremony at his residence when the 67-year-old premier takes the vows with Jeanne Abdullah, a petite 53-year-old Eurasian beauty.
The couple have never been seen together in public and the premier had long brushed off speculation about their romance, but Wednesday he stunned the country by announcing he was getting married again.
His marriage to first wife Endon was widely seen as a model relationship in Malaysia, as they were regularly seen holding hands and exchanging affectionate kisses at public functions.
When she died of breast cancer in 2005, not many in Malaysia would have believed he would ever get re-married-perhaps even the premier himself, who still carries the torch for his late wife.
"My love for Endon remains as strong as ever but I have fallen in love with this one," Abdullah said.
