Many shades of disparities

February 05, 2025 00:00:00

Inequality in Bangladesh is deeply entrenched across economic, social, and political dimensions. The gap between the wealthy and the poor remains stark, with the richest controlling a disproportionate share of resources, while many in rural areas struggle with poverty, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to essential services such as education and healthcare. The urban-rural divide exacerbates these disparities, further hindering equitable development.

Gender inequality is another critical issue, as women continue to face wage gaps, limited career advancement, and societal constraints. Although female participation in the workforce has increased, gender-based violence and traditional norms still restrict women's freedom and opportunities. Disparities in education and healthcare are particularly pronounced in rural areas, where girls are more likely to drop out of school and have reduced access to quality services.

Social and political inequalities also persist, especially for ethnic minorities and indigenous communities, who often face systemic discrimination and marginalisation. Political power remains concentrated in the hands of a privileged few, limiting the influence of underrepresented groups. While government and NGO initiatives have made some progress in addressing these disparities, deep-rooted issues such as corruption and entrenched social hierarchies continue to hinder meaningful change.
