Maoist attack kills 15 in India

BHUBANESWAR, India, April 13 (AFP): - At least 15 people including 11 security men were killed in India in an overnight gunbattle with Maoist rebels who had stormed a mine, police said Monday.
About 100 Maoists took employees hostage at the complex in the eastern state of Orissa, where Asia's biggest bauxite mines are located.
Police said they suspected the rebels were aiming to steal explosives.
The attack came as the region prepares to vote Thursday in the first phase of India's five stage April 16-May 13 national polls.
"Eleven paramilitary personnel lost their lives during the exchange of fire," senior Orissa police officer Manmohan Praharaj told the reporter.
