Students are taught math and English around 10 years up to the secondary level, but at the end they can not use math and English in practical life. While grown up, most people encounter a problem measuring ancestral land although they started learning these in grade five math curriculum. They can not measure their cultivable land, or how much timber will be needed for a window at the time of building a house. They cannot also figure out how much property one would get, according to Muslim law, through inheritance after the expiry of his father who left behind four sons and three daughters.
Most of the students will not be able to estimate how big a meter, or a millimeter is or how many drops of water can make a millimeter. And same way they can not estimate how big a square meter or a hectare of land or even one decimal of land is. But all were taught in grade five math curriculum.
A man selling fish or a butcher or a carpenter who has not got any formal education can calculate the amount of money without any calculator but most of our students can not.
Many students can not face foreigners or even can not write a simple letter or an application or a paragraph in English. Most of the students can not speak English properly.
We urge the authorities to introduce Mental Math, Math Trails and speaking and listening programmes in the curriculum.
