Medical college in Narsingdi

July 28, 2015 00:00:00

Bangladesh needs thousands of physicians to provide Medicare services to its citizens. Besides, earning foreign currency abroad, the country needs skilled professionals to implement various development programmers at home. We all speak of imparting professional and technical education, but little progress has been made so far.

Narsingdi  is the nearest district to the capital. One can reach Narsingdi within an hour by road from the capital whereas it takes more than two hours to travel from north end to south end of the metropolis. A good number of industrial units have been in operation at both sides of Dhaka-Narsingdi highway. It is also the largest wholesale market for power loom textile products where a large number of employment opportunities has been created in those industries. Narsingdi can be a good destination for setting up a full-fledged medical college for imparting undergraduate medical education.

No doubt, it will enhance the health services for the local people as well as people of other localities. Thousands of students at higher secondary level are interested to study medicine, but only a fraction them get an opportunity to do so. In fact, expansion of general higher education increases the number of educated un-employed population, which is mere wastage of national wealth. A medical college could be set up at new Narshigdi town to meet a part of the growing demand. We urge the government to set up a medical college in Narsingdi.
