Modernising agriculture

Bangladesh is an agricultural country, yet our policymakers appear indifferent to the development of this vital sector. Despite being endowed with vast natural resources, there has been a noticeable lack of effort to modernise agricultural sector. Many of our farmers are not sufficiently educated to adopt modern agricultural methods and practices.
In recent years, the demand for organic vegetables has surged due to growing concerns about health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and other chronic diseases. Type 1 diabetes, in particular, has become increasingly common among children and young adults. Studies suggest that increasing the consumption of organic vegetables can help reduce the risk of developing such conditions. According to research by the National Institutes of Health (USA), the global market for organic food has expanded rapidly over the past 15 years. This trend is driven by the increasing awareness of health risks associated with chemically contaminated food.
Despite this, Bangladeshi policymakers have taken little action to promote organic farming. Organic food not only contributes to better health but can also boost economic growth. Bangladesh is blessed with fertile soil, rich in alluvial deposits, which makes it ideal for cultivating organic crops.
However, farmers often face significant challenges. Despite favourable conditions such as fertile soil and a suitable climate, they lack knowledge of proper farming techniques and the risks associated with excessive pesticide use. Consequently, many suffer losses when crops are damaged or fail to ripen properly. These unripe or rotten crops often lead farmers into debt, exacerbating their struggles.
To address these issues, policymakers must take proactive steps. Organising seminars and conducting field visits can educate farmers on modern and organic farming methods. Additionally, awareness campaigns and advertising on the benefits of organic farming should be implemented to encourage its adoption. With concerted efforts, not only can farmers be saved from financial hardship, but the country can also establish itself as a leader in sustainable agriculture.
