Mogadishu peace efforts threatened

August 28, 2007 00:00:00

MOGADISHU, Aug 27 (AFP): A series of explosions rocked Mogadishu Sunday, killing two children and an elderly man, and wounding five other people as relentless violence cast a pall over peace efforts in the shattered Horn of Africa nation.
A roadside explosion killed the children on their way to school in northern Mogadishu's Gupta district, tearing them apart and fatally the man, who later died in hospital from heavy bleeding.
"The kids could not be recognised because the bomb cut them into pieces. It was an awful thing to happen to children going to school," said witness Moalim Nur Aden.
Separately, insurgents hurled at least four grenades at Ethiopian and Somali forces searching for weapons in the northern Suqaholaha district, wounding two officers, police said.
