ULAN BATOR, Mongolia, Jun 18 (AP): A helicopter carrying firefighters and equipment crashed into a mountain last week, killing 14 of 22 aboard, a government official said Monday.
The Russian-made Mi-8 helicopter disappeared Wednesday en route to a forest fire in north central Mongolia but the crash site wasn't found until Saturday, said Emergency Minister S. Otgonbayar. Rescue crews and a medical team were still working to save survivors, he said, including some trapped in the wreckage.
Relatives of the victims told reporters that the government did not mount a search for the helicopter until Friday, and that officials initially reported that the helicopter had landed safely after running short of fuel.
"My brother survived, but we want to know why they did not immediately start rescue operations after they lost contact with the helicopter," Ganholog, who goes by one name, told to reporters.
The dead included two of the three pilots on board, Otgonbayar said.
The helicopter belonged to the Mongolia's Defense Ministry. No other details were immediately available.
