Monkey pox, a new health risk

If you are still reeling from the Covid pandemic, we are sorry to say that there is another virus that can take a firm hold across the world. It is monkey pox. It is a rare viral disease seldom detected outside of Africa. More than 120 confirmed or suspected cases of monkey pox have already been reported in at least 11 non-African countries in the past week. The emergence of the virus in separate populations across the globe, where it does not usually appear has alarmed everyone, particularly scientists.
The symptoms of monkey pox have been identified as fever, swelling, body aches, aching muscles and exhaustion, and itchy rash and lesions. It can reportedly be transmitted through contact with skin lesions and droplets of a contaminated person, as well as shared items such as bedding and towels. A form of monkey pox is reportedly so frightening that up to 10 per cent of infected people can die from it. However, most patients infected with the virus recovered within a few weeks. The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for an investigation. In this situation, Bangladesh cannot remain complacent since there is no report of this rare disease. Rather, our health authorities should strictly monitor the ongoing global infection of monkey pox and do the needful.
