SEOUL, Aug 24 (AFP): South Korea Friday announced new aid to North Korea worth almost 40 million dollars to help it recover from devastating floods.
Unification Minister Lee Jae-Joung said the South in mid- September would start shipping cement, iron bars, trucks, fuel, roadbuilding equipment and road materials worth 37.4 billion won (39.7 million dollars).
The decision came a day after Seoul started trucking emergency aid worth 7.1 billion won across the heavily fortified frontier.
About 40 truckloads of instant noodles, blankets, emergency kits and mineral water were delivered to the border town of Kaesong. The aid shipment will be completed by the end of this month.
The reclusive communist state has reported about 300 people dead or missing after torrential rains earlier this month, 300,000 homeless and 11 per cent of the grain harvest-equivalent to 450,000 tons-lost.
