Mosquito: City residents' constant woe

February 28, 2021 00:00:00

Mosquito bite is a painful experience that Dhaka's residents face every day. The menace is not something new, rather it seems to be a perennial one. The onset of warmer followed by spring provide an ideal occasion for the mosquitoes to breed. The suffering of the public from the menace seems to have surpassed all its previous records. And there seems to be no respite from this mosquito torture. The city corporation people are seen spraying repellents in different localities to drive away mosquitoes, but the insects come back with renewed vigour and make life miserable for us. The surge in mosquito numbers can cause an increase in the cases of dengue, chikungunya and malaria. In 2019, Bangladesh suffered from a devastating dengue outbreak. If we do not act now, the dengue outbreak could resurface again in the country.

There are various ways we can take protective measures at home to save ourselves from mosquito bites. For example, we can always make use of mosquito nets before going to bed. Maintaining hygiene and keeping the neighbourhood clean could be other measures. Also, the city corporations need to carry out their duties responsibly to ensure that the spread of mosquitoes is curbed at all costs.
