Motivating farmers to cultivate Chinese variety of ginger

August 31, 2014 00:00:00

In kitchen market, the retail price of a kg of ginger was Tk 40 a few years back, which is Tk 180 now as the price of ginger has increased in China owing to very low harvest in the current season. Bangladesh imports a huge quantity of Chinese variety ginger every year to meet local demand. It is possible for the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) to ensure production of an adequate quantity of ginger in the country within a couple of years. The DAE should motivate farmers to cultivate Chinese variety of ginger as it is very big in size and per hectare yield is also high relative to the local variety. The DAE has to provide inputs and advise the farmers at different stages of cultivation.
