It is alarming that muggers have become active ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr. The Financial Express carried this timely and worrying issue on its front page on Sunday. The report says muggers use firearms, sharp weapons, motorbikes and in some cases cars in committing crimes and their targets are businessmen, traders, pedestrians, Bikash agents and shoppers.
There are frequent media reports how people are robbed on the street. The Financial Express report also cited some incidents of mugging in the city in recent times. The actual number of such incidents must be many times higher than reported in the media.
However, we do not agree with your report that the police and other law-enforcement agencies have taken tight security arrangements to avert incidents like snatching and robbery during the month of Ramadan.
We can see the presence of the police at various spots. But they do not seem to be on alert, they just remain sitting and gossiping.  The police also show reluctance to register case if a victim goes to the police stations.
No doubt, the police know the sensitive spots where crimes are committed but they do not seem to be sincere to prevent acts of crime. Mere increasing the number of law-enforcers will not help improve the situation. The police know how to combat such crimes. What they lack is sincerity.
