Snatching, a serious crime that breeds insecurity and anxiety in our society, is a pressing issue. It involves the forcible seizure of valuable possessions like money, mobile phones, or bags from individuals or groups, causing not only financial loss but also severe physical and mental trauma to the victims. This crime, prevalent in both urban and rural areas, is on the rise, posing a significant threat to our society's security and well-being.
Recently, the number of snatching incidents has risen alarmingly in Bangladesh, especially in Dhaka. Snatching gangs have become more reckless. Many victims suffer serious injuries, and some even lose their lives. The streets of Dhaka have become highly unsafe at night.
There are several social and economic reasons behind mugging. Poverty and unemployment force many into crime as a means of survival. Drug addiction also drives people to commit crimes for quick money. Weak law enforcement and the lack of strict punishment allow criminals to escape justice easily, encouraging repeat offences.
Moreover, busy urban lifestyles and inadequate security create opportunities for muggers, as people's carelessness and lack of awareness make it easier for criminals. Additionally, social degradation, a lack of moral education, and weak family values push young people towards crime. Neglect from family and society is a significant factor in increasing criminal activities.
Preventing violent snatching requires a united front from individuals, society, and the government. Law enforcement needs to step up its efforts to ensure public safety. Public awareness campaigns and volunteer groups can engage citizens in ensuring safety, and increasing intelligence surveillance with public cooperation proving crucial. Furthermore, the use of modern technology, such as smartphone emergency alert apps, can empower victims to quickly notify the police of this particular danger. It is imperative that the interim government take effective steps to eradicate mugging and all forms of crime and lawlessness.
